Choosing The Right Audio Amplifier For Your House
Looking at today’s audio amplifier devices, one cannot help but be daunted by the number of technologies and models. Regardless of your use, I will clarify some basic amplifiers terms which will be useful when selecting the best model.
Audio amplifiers are the basic connection between your source such as a DVD or Blu-Ray player and your speakers. An amplifier will convert the relatively weak source audio into a signal strong adequate to drive your speakers.
Even though some audio sources have already a built-in amplifier, a separate amplifier offers you more freedom for selecting the model that best complements your speakers. Some of today's miniature amplifier models can be concealed nearly everywhere due to their small size.
When choosing an amplifier, your primary concern probably is the amplifier output wattage. You will need a high wattage if you are driving speakers with a low sensitivity (expressed in dB/W), for driving speakers in large rooms or for outdoor speakers. Don't overdrive your speakers though since this may irreparably harm your speakers.
Still, a 20 to 50 Watt amplifier will give you more than sufficient power in many situations so don't be overly concerned about the rated amplifier wattage.
Amplifier wattage is given either as rms or continuous power which shows how much power the amplifier can deliver constantly or as maximum or peak power which shows how much power the amp can output for short periods of time. Many people will take a look at the rms power value whilst selecting an amplifier. Though, music signals are anything but continuous. Consequently picking an amp that has sufficient peak power handling is just as important.
Audio quality is just as imperative as having enough audio power and therefore you should also take a look at figures such as total harmonic distortion or THD. No amplifier is completely perfect and the amplified signal will contain some error components which will distort the signal to some amount. THD is either expressed in percent or dB. The level of distortion varies between amplifier types. A smaller distortion means higher audio quality. The amount of distortion will be less than 0.05% for a high-quality amplifier. Consumer type amplifiers have higher distortion figures. Typical figures are up to 10% depending on the output power.
Another specification is known as signal-to-noise ratio. This number specifies how much undesired components such as hum and noise the amplifier will add to the audio signal. Audiophile-grade amps will have an SNR of 100 dB or higher. Consumer-grade amps will have at least 80 dB signal-to-noise ratio.
There are several amplifier technologies available. Today's amplifiers are mostly Class-D amplifiers. Class-D amplifiers have a high power efficiency and waste little energy as heat. High power efficiency has led to the development of extremely small amplifiers. Some of these latest mini amplifiers are no bigger than a deck of cards. A lot of Class-D amplifiers, though, have higher distortion and a lower signal-to-noise ratio than Class-A or Class-AB amplifiers. Be certain to look closely at these numbers when choosing a Class-D type amplifier.
Griffin's Twenty audio amp gives AirPlay 20 watts per channel (TUAW)
Griffin has announced an accessory called Twenty, a small audio amplifier that
will accept audio from an AirPort Express to drive unpowered speakers. The
Twenty includes a TOSLINK cable to deliver pure digital audio from the AirPort
Express to the unit, and additional connectors in the back allow you to plug
speakers right in.
As the name implies, Twenty delivers 20 watts per channel of 2.1 audio. The
unit's top includes a nifty and well-thought-out adapter that allows you to
plug your AirPort Express's power plug directly into it, which means you'll
only need one outlet to power both the AirPort Express and the Twenty.
Audio can stream from your Mac or iOS device to the AirPort Express via
AirPlay, and from there audio passes from the AirPort Express directly into
the Twenty. As helpfully noted on Griffin's website, you'll have to purchase
your own AirPort Express and speakers.
Griffin's Twenty looks like a nice, miniaturized replacement for a full-
fledged audio amplifier. I've already got one AirPort Express in my living
room tied directly into my 7.2 surround sound system, but Griffin's Twenty
would be ideal for the secondary AirPort Express in my office.
