Steps In Putting Speaker Cables Behind The Walls

Home theater systems are becoming popular today, and most homeowners would want to have a good home theater system. However, one problem with these systems aside from their high cost is the cable clutter. When you have several cables connecting a few devices in the living room or bedroom, the result is an ugly twisting of cables. The remedy is to fish the cables through the wall. This sounds a bit daunting, but it is the only way to keep those HDMI or speaker cables from running on the floor and making an ugly sight.

Installing the cables in the walls can be a tough task, but you can do it with simple tools. Here are some things that you would need:

  1. Drill

  2. Drywall saw

  3. Screw driver

  4. Glow rods

  5. Electric tape

  6. Level

  7. Stud finder

  8. Mounting bracket

The last one, the mounting bracket, is an essential component of this in-wall cable installation. It is important in two ways. First, it prevents the dry wall from breaking. Second, it serves as a place for the wall plate to be mounted.

In-wall speaker wire installation depends on the wall structure. However, general home installations of cables proceed as follows:

  1. Get the stud finder and mark four holes on two favorable spots on the wall. Also use the stud finder to find locations of the fire block behind the wall. Ideally, wall plates would have to be mounted on the part of the wall where there is no fire block.

  2. Use the drywall saw to cut the part of the wall you marked earlier. You shall be coming up with two rectangular holes on the wall where you will insert the cables. Do this carefully to avoid destroying the wall or making larger hole than intended.

  3. When the holes are done, the mounting brackets shall be fitted. The sides of the mounting bracket should sit on the drywall. Screw the mounting brackets firmly on the wall.

  4. Use a glow rod in inserting the cables into the holes and through the wall. Tape the edge of the cable to the edge of the glow rod and use the glow rod to direct the cable through the wall and to the second bracket. The cables can then be attached to the wall mounts, which in turn will be fitted on the wall. But you encounter a fire block along the way, then proceed to number 5.

  5. To allow the cable to pass through the fire block, locate the fire block using the stud finder and make neat square hole cut above it. Then drill a hole through the fire block just big enough for the cable or cables to pass through. Seal the hole on the fire block with an approved sealant. Return the piece of drywall you cut earlier, and then patch the drywall. Finally, run the cables to the second bracket as mentioned in the previous instruction.

Be reminded that your country may have specific fire block regulations. Ask your local Fire department before doing anything to the fire bock.

If these steps are way beyond your knack, consider asking for a professional service.
