Melodyne DNA - Nice Piece Of Kit But What's It For?
10 years ago the usual way to appropriate pitch in vocals was Antares Autotune. To appropriate bits manually, you'd have to make use of graphical mode. It was very fiddly, you'd must load in just a few seconds of vocal after which nip in to an inch square field and move the audio up or all the way down to right the pitch then bounce down. It didn't sound nice either. Then came Celemony's Melodyne, the quality of its central pitch/time manipulation engine generated an actual sense of pleasure amongst Producers, Engineers and music production schools like Garnish College of Sound on account of the brand new prospects and person friendliness. It was not solely simple to use but sounded fairly good too.
Then in 2009 got here Melodyne DNA (Direct Word Access). It promised what some called unattainable: to pick out and manipulate particular person notes inside a polyphonic audio file. I was certainly skeptical, however seeing a couple of movies on youtube final year blew me away so I could not wait to crack it open myself. It really works as a stand alone or in a DAW like Logic, Cubase or Professional Tools software.
Once I did, I loaded in a stereo mix of All Saints' 'By no means Ever'. The explanation I chose this report is as a result of I knew the association inside out and needed to compare the intro with just the vocal and piano, and the center of the music when all the 'bells and whistles' are in. Although the combo feels full throughout, there're not too many musical elements happening at anybody time.
I discovered it easy to nip in and alter the person notes within the piano chords throughout the song. Impressively, change the pitch of all of the instruments with out effecting anything playing on the identical point. Even devices which have been relatively close to one another in pitch. Sadly, I struggled to 'carry' the lead vocal in any a part of the song. Even the intro where it's only the LV (lead vocal) and piano in the mix. The strategy right here would obviously be deleting everything you see which is not the LV part. It simply didn't sound good enough. Not even with a little bit of 'splosh' (Lexican reverb or House Designer and Delay Designer)
Q: What use is that this groundbreaking software program to me? A: Sadly, I am unable to think of any.
• The old Melodyne is ok for me to tune monophonic vocal tracks. (To be sincere, I do not know if DNA sounds any better utilizing it monophonically)
• Acapella's 'lifted' off of mixes are unusable.
• I don't need to nick different folks's musical parts or chords within the form of MIDI *
• I'll by no means spend money on session musicians or orchestras before realizing a hundred% how the chords and melody are going to go.
So, it's undoubtedly essentially the most unimaginable software program I've each come throughout and nice enjoyable to play with. But, I can't for the lifetime of me think where it might be helpful to me!
I did this with my Songwriting students: for those who like a chord development and want to know what the chords are, you figure out the basis observe for every chord and write it down. You can easily do with my ear however it may take some longer than others to do. In a nutshell, the notice that sounds most just like the chord needs to be the basis note. Now work out if it is major or minor by listening to it and experimenting; now (specifically if it's jazzy or bluesy) roughly determine any extensions. Write all this down and play by repeatedly tweaking till it sounds good. I believe you'll discover that (particularly in case you're playing a guitar and recorded instrument is keyboard based) you might be already taking part in totally different inversions before you tweak some more to make these chords 'your individual'.

I have written a song - how do I make a backing track for it?
I've been writing my own songs for a while. I now need to make computerised backing tracks for them. I do not know how to use Logic/Cubase or anything similar yet, but I would like to find a service that can do this for me. I've tried googling various terms but am not getting the right sort of results! I basically just need a service where I can send my recorded vocals, send some genre guidelines and how I want it to sound... and then they write a backing track. Anyone know of anywhere that does this?

Digital Performer, and Performer before it, has been a Mac-only program for
almost as long as you've been able to buy a computer called "Macintosh." The
first Performer release was available in 1985. (Professional Composer, before
that, was out in '84.) Performer, accordingly, has had a big impact on the
history of the sequencer, and … Continue ->
