An After Dinner Dessert Tonight
A quick and easy cake dessert is an angel food cake. With the ease of making this delight it has become a tasty go to treat for family events. With a kitchen aid hand mixer and some choice ingredients this cake can be made in about forty five minutes. Using fresh ingredients can really improve the flavor of anything baked or cooked. If using lemon zest then zest your own instead of purchasing a packaged zest. Fresh squeezed lemons are also a lot better than a lemon juice from a concentrate.
Put an oven rack in the middle. In a large mixing bowl begin to froth twelve egg whites. An electric hand mixer will make this a quick step. Medium speed should do the job. Splash in a tablespoon of lemon zest. Then put in 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of extract of vanilla. This mixture should be beaten for 5 minutes.
Slowly add in a cup and a half of powder sugar. For the next two minutes the froth should begin to become more firm. Sift a cup of flour over the mixture. Then take a spatula and fold the concoction it all the flour is mixed in properly. Because the flour was sifted in there should not be too many lumps. If there are lumps then break them down before continuing.
Use a 10 inch nonstick pan for angel food cakes. After pouring the mix into the pan and bake it for forty-five minutes. When the top begins to brown this will indicate that the angel food is done. A toothpick or fork can be used to see if the cake is done. Insert the fork and remove it. If there is no cake on the fork then it is done.
Now that you have this moist and delicious cake you can decide on what to top it with. There are all kinds of sauces that can be made to taste. Most of these sauces can be made with any combination of flavors with a plain yogurt.
Angel food is such a light cake so don't try a frosting. The cake will not support this type of topping. Try using a cuisinart hand mixer or whisking some yogurt, lemon juice and honey together. This is a very light sauce that has a lot of flavor.
