Taking A Closer Look At The HDMI To DVI Cable
Standing for High-Definition Multimedia Interface, the HDMI system has been developed to transmit uncompressed digital information between different audio video equipment. Arriving on the market towards the end of 2003, the HDMI to DVI cable became available at the same time as the sales of HDTV were taking off.
This cable is capable of connecting DVD players, set-top boxes, Play Stations, Xboxes and Audio Video receivers to HD televisions, computer monitors and countless other AV devices.
Using a single cable, support is available for video formats on any TV or PC and as many as eight compressed or uncompressed channels of digital audio, plus a Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) connection. A CEC connection will allow HDMI equipment to be controlled by each other and to operate a number of different devices with a single remote control.
Due to the fact that HDMI is compatible electrically with DVI (Digital Visual Interface), there is no need to convert the signal. There is also no degradation of the quality of the video when using the connecting cable. The high definition standard has all but replaced such diverse standards as composite video, coaxial cable, SCART, S-Video, VGA and D-Terminal.
Rapidly approaching the de facto industry standard for HDTV, the marketing group In-Stat says that ninety percent of all high-definition TV sets manufactured in 2007 were fitted with the interface. Subsequently, In-Stat reported that 229 million of the devices were purchased in 2008 followed by a further 394 million in 2009. They further predicted that by the end of 2009 every digital TV would have HDMI installed.
The connector has four distinct types, which are named A, B, C and D. The A type has been designed with nineteen pins. It is compatible with the single link DVI-D standard. The B type's design supports 29 pins and carries twice the video bandwidth supported by Type A. The design of Type C reverts to the nineteen pin format but has been modified for use with portable equipment. Type D is also a nineteen pin connector but it is a micro type and its reduced size looks more like a micro-USB connector.
A number of versions of the HDMI standard have been produced and every one has been numbered progressively. The versions currently available are 1.0 to 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4 which all use the exactly the same cable but the bandwidth and capabilities have been increased with each new version. No maximum length for the cable has been specified, but the materials used in construction and the manufacturing processes, limit the practical length of the cable. The length of a HDMI to DVI cable currently varies between five and fifteen meters.

CES 2012: ghetto blaster for the 21st century
Everybody who's anybody in the hip hop scene these days has a company churning
out headphones with their name on them. Actor/rapper Christopher Brian
Bridges, aka Ludacris, (see what he did there?) is no exception and has been
the man behind Soul Electronics and its fittingly chunky cans since records
began (see what _we_ did there?).
All has been going fairly smoothly, it seems, because, at CES 2012, Soul
branched out away from personal audio into audio that is very public indeed.
The Soul Party in a Box is a big, old speaker system with a handle on top that
rather stretches the definition of the word "portable". It looks like a cross
between an amplifier and the TDK Boombox that arrived in 2011.
Within the body are stowed eight speakers facing every direction you need -
two 6.5-inch subs, a couple of 3-inch midrangers and four 1-inch tweeters. The
effect is that it's really, really loud. The company claims there's enough to
fill any room. We claim that that's understating the output of this thing by a
