Making sure that your business passes restaurant point of sale credit card PCI security audit
Restaurants to take into action the set of security rules from the credit card industry
Hundreds and even thousands of restaurants is being opposed by the credit card industry for not sufficiently protecting their diner's credit card info from the possibility of theft, with Visa, MasterCard and financial institutions that process electronic payment over recent months are sending warning letters and conducting seminars. Moves like this aims at forcing restaurants into taking more action when it comes to protecting their diners' credit card info.
According to companies that process card transactions, there are still tens of thousands of food service establishments that do not comply with the set of security rules of the credit card industry. So every restaurant that takes plastic is required to follow a set of security regulations instituted by Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover.
Data recorded by Visa indicates that since January 2005, around 40% of the incident wherein criminals gain unauthorized access to credit card info is made up of restaurants -- providing the largest percentage of incidents for a merchant category.
Separately, AmbironTrustWave, a Chicago-based data security auditor for merchants, reported that 62 percent of the security violations it witnessed during the prior 18 months occurred in the restaurant industry.
The violations involved different kinds of security lapses such as poorly guarded wireless networks -- which enable thieves to access information from the parking lot using a laptop -- as well as the lack of strictness to their systems that make it possible for unethical employees to grab credit card information.
Mostly, consumers are not aware when their credit card information is in danger. Although, not all security breaches produced successful fraud, and mostly, merchants do not recognize these incidents unless there is a significant likelihood that a major fraud will take place or has already been identified. Also, companies that issues credit cards usually don't close a customer's account except if fraud has taken place.
Restaurateurs may have a hard time with credit card security rules, since the regulations can be difficult for smaller merchants. The National Restaurant Association trade group says that it hears from restaurant owners who thought they complied with rules, but found out their systems were not functioning properly and were penalized.
Fines for restaurants that violate credit card industry rules by keeping credit card information have amounted to more than $100,000 in some cases. Visa fined merchants across all categories $4.6 million for security violations in 2006, an increase from the $3.4 million in fines the previous year.
After recently conducting special security briefings with several hundred restaurants, although they declined to provide a breakdown of merchant types, Visa believes a merchant group needs additional attention.
At the same time, companies that process credit card transactions are also turning up the heat on restaurants. Credit card companies, as punishment, will end services to those who ignore security regulations.
Most restaurants uses software combining such features as tabulating bills, delivering orders to the kitchen and tracking reservations, credit card companies are especially worried because they cannot require software makers to follow their security rules, so the pressure it passed on to restaurants. Visa's web site maintains a list of software programs that meet its requirements.
But software developers that even with the best software, restaurants could still be in a lot of trouble if they have a weak password protection or firewalls. Software companies say it is not up to them to let restaurateurs know what they must do to be in compliance with credit card rules.

Can I use a graphics card (PCI-E) on my system which is a PCI slot?
I was asking as I have tis card now as a present and would like to use it on my system and wonder if there is an adaptor that can take it from PCI-Express to PCI I know its a long shot but I wanted to check before I put it on Ebay - Thanks for your help in advance ![]()
For the Techy ppl out there.... My PC is a Dell Dimension and the Graphics Card is an Nvidea GeForce 7300 (256mb)
I'm afraid not, the bus technology is different, and the pin configuration is also slightly different.
however, PCI-E motherboards are coming down in price quickly, so a real bargain can be had at the moment. =]
And I'd strongly advise upgrading to PCI-E now, since AGP devices are quickly becoming harder to come across.
Hope I helped
