Guide To Help Understand The Output Power Number Of Recent Audio Amplifiers
The latest amplifiers come in all shapes and sizes. Finding the perfect type for your application can often be tricky. There is a large number of different names and technical jargon describing stereo amplifiers, such as "Class D" or "t-amp models". In addition, each producer shows a big amount of specs, including "SNR", "dynamic distortion" and so on. In this expose, I will have a closer look at one of the most fundamental of these terms: "amplifier output power". This term is also called "wattage".
A quantity of of the technical jargon which amplifier companies publish regularly are misleading and do not inevitably give a good indication of the real functioning of the amp. Let me now go ahead and clarify the power spec of audio amps.
"Wattage" shows how loud your amplifier can drive your speakers. Based on your application, you can choose a tiny amp offering just several watts or a larger one offering several hundred watts. Most home radios only incorporate amps which have several watts power which regularly is enough for a small room. If you intend to shake your walls then you obviously want to choose an amplifier that offers as much as a few hundred watts. For best audio quality, you may wish to go with an amplifier that has bigger power than you need since many amplifiers will show growing distortion as the music output power increases.
Some specs are going to provide the power in "Watts peak" while others are going to exhibit "Watts rms". "Peak" means that the amp is able to provide the output power for a short period of time only whilst "Watts rms" means that the amp is going to continuously provide that amount of power. The peak output power spec in the past habitually led to vendors showing large wattage ratings for tiny amplifiers. However, in reality these amps would not be able to maintain bigger amounts of output power for larger amounts of time.
Nowadays many amplifiers are going to specify rms power which offers a better indication of the amplifier's real performance. On the other hand, please make sure that your amplifier has enough headroom to avoid clipping of the audio. The most important reason is that audio signals are going to have short bursts of high power which the amp has to cope with. Rms power is measured with a uniform sine signal that hardly compares with a music signal regarding the power envelope.
Usually the impedance of the speakers which you attach to the amplifier will determine how much power the amp can offer. Speaker impedance is measured in Ohms. Typically speakers have an impedance between 4 and 8 Ohms. Amplifiers have a restricted output voltage swing due to the fixed internal supply voltage. Hence the highest output power will differ depending on the speaker impedance. The smaller the loudspeaker impedance the bigger the maximum power the amplifier may deliver. Consequently frequently largest output power is given for a specific speaker impedance.
Yamaha outs retro THR5 and THR10 amps (Slash Gear)
I like products that look really old, but have modern insides. Yamaha has a
new amplifier for musicians that look like something out of the 50′s to me.
The amps come in two versions including the THR5 pictured and the THR10. These
are small amps reports Wired looking like the head unit of a stack. [...]
